Graywolf poet Elizabeth Alexander to read at Obama's inauguration

Graywolf Press announced tonight that its author Elizabeth Alexander will read an original poem at Barack Obama’s inauguration in Washington next month. Graywolf will publish a special chapbook featuring Alexander’s poem. The news is a major coup for the respected St. Paul publishing house. Obama’s invitation will make Alexander only the fourth poet in U.S. history to speak at a presidential inauguration; her predecessors are Robert Frost (John F. Kennedy), Maya Angelou (Bill Clinton), and Miller Williams (also Clinton). MORE »

CORRECTION: Edison Fresh Start

The paragraph in Fresh Start at Edison High referring to Teach for America is corrected as follows:

But, according to TFA media representative Kerci Marcello Stroud, only 44% of recruits stay in the high-poverty school they are originally placed in once their two-year commitment is up. The rest transfer to wealthier schools (whose students need less support), or “burn out” and leave teaching all together. Correction: Stroud said that 61% stay in teaching, but was not able to say how many of these teachers remain in low-income schools beyond their second year. MORE »

THEATER | The complicated visions of Aditi Kapil

Aditi Kapil is one of the finest comedic talents ever to see a Twin Cities stage. Too bad she’s squandered her gift by deciding to write and direct in addition to acting. That decision has led to Kapil’s play Love Person being nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. It’s led to her newest work Agnes Under the Big Top, A Fairy Tale copping a New Play Development grant from the National Endowment for the Arts; the play will be developed with Lark Play Development Center in New York. She broke into Twin Cities theater as a would-be successor to Lucille Ball, only to wind up as, without question, an artist of proven consequence. MORE »

15 years of Kulture Klub: Art by homeless youth on display at SooVAC

With a retrospective exhibit now showing at the Soo Visual Arts Center in Minneapolis, Kulture Klub Collaborative (KKC) is celebrating 15 years of partnering artists and homeless youth. KKC’s founder, Dorit Cypis, created the exhibit to honor the five different groups that make Kulture Klub possible: artists, homeless youth, social service organizations, arts organizations, and funders. “The five different groups create a geography on the walls,” says Mike Hoyt, KKC’s director. The gallery is divided into sections, with each of the five groups having a home. MORE »

CORRECTION: Author of Hmong and Lutheran in Minnesota

The author of Hmong and Lutheran in Minnesota is Katie Mocol, a journalism student at Hamline University and an intern at the TC Daily Planet. The author line originally, and erroneously, listed the name of her fellow Hamline journalism student and intern, which was my error.

BOOKS | "Skirmish": Bitterly funny poetry from Dobby Gibson

To be honest, I’ve never been an avid reader of poetry. I have nothing against poems, but for some reason my mind wants words on a page to present themselves as prose, and balks at taking them seriously when they’re organized in rhymed couplets, sonnet form, or—God forbid—free verse. When verse is set to music, I can generally handle it better. One reason I found Minneapolis poet Dobby Gibson’s new collection, Skirmish, so enjoyable is that his combination of mordant wit and bittersweet longing so recalls the lyrics of my favorite songwriter, Bob Dylan. Taking it to the streets -- or the meeting rooms

Two opportunities to speak out on budgets, local and state:

The Minnesota Coalition for a People’s Bailout and the Welfare Rights Committee are organizing a campaign to demand a “People’s Bailout” of increased and extended aid to the poor, protection of public education funding, and no layoffs. The campaign kicks off with a protest at the state capitol on Tuesday, January 6 at noon, during the opening session of the state legislature. MORE »
