Bold New Performance Art for Adventurous Audiences
October 16-18 & November 6-8, 2008

WHAT:
This season’s Naked Stages series draws on the artists’ personal journeys of finding, nurturing, and celebrating their authenticity. Through the use of projected images, recorded music, scripted and improvisational text, the four performances explore the kaleidoscope of experiences that make up our lives.

Back by popular demand, The New York Times calls Wicked “Broadway’s biggest blockbuster,” and when it first played Minneapolis in 2006 it broke box office records and sold out in record time. Long before that girl from Kansas arrives in Munchkinland, two girls meet in the land of Oz. One—born with emerald green skin—is smart, fiery and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular. How these two grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch makes for “the most complete, and completely satisfying, new musical in a long time” (USA Today).

Explore the traditions associated with Saint Lucia, from her origins as a fourth-century martyr to the legends of her appearance in Sweden.

There are many legends associated with Lucia starting in fourth century Sicily. A young woman gave her dowry away to the poor and confessed herself a Christian. For this she was accused of witchcraft and put to death. Another legend tells of a famine in medieval days. A glowing figure dressed in white, Saint Lucia came across a great lake in the province of Värmland, Sweden.
She brought gifts of food to the starving people.

This fall, look at yourself with new eyes in Body + Identity, a creative and cross-cultural approach to examining our perceptions of ourselves as women. Led by renowned photographer Jila Nikpay, this class will open our eyes to the ways in which we view our bodies, our selves, and the women around us.

A major exhibit of contemporary art from India, at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.

“Irreplaceable: Wildlife in a Warming World” is a national campaign and travelling photo exhibit that raises awareness about plants and animals threatened by global warming. Featuring work by award-winning wildlife conservation photographers, the 40-print exhibit brings the public face-to-face with the wildlife most threatened by climate. Included in the exhibit are species that Earthjustice, the nation’s leading public interest environmental law organization, are fighting to protect from global warming.

NIcademus Art and Framing is proud to announce their first art opening. Local artist Booka B, aka Adam Booker, has been around the Twin Cities art scene for years and is excited to show. Paintings on canvas paper canvas and found objects exhibit a tribal feel mixed with an urban flair.Come and discover Saint Paul’‘s newest Art Gallery and meet the artist on opening night.

Bethel University’s Olson Gallery pleased to present new works by Bethel University Associate Professor of Art Jeff Wetzig.

Jeff Wetzig’s collection of prints transform their traditional roots in Japanese woodblock prints to explore the medium as a means of installation. He investigates the idea of boundaries and borders as they relate to themes such as mass communication, repetition, and fear. The delicate nature of line and color in his woodblock prints are an interesting contrast to their subject matter.
