Ballet of the Dolls

Founded in 1986 by choreographer Myron Johnson, the Ballet of the Dolls is a dance-theater company housed in the Ritz Theater in Northeast Minneapolis. Their performances, which feature elements of dance and theater, include original works and deconstructions of traditional ballets such as the Nutcracker. I’ve been avoiding writing this.

For over three months.

Just like I avoided writing the final monologue in my play “Leave” even though I knew for a couple of days exactly what it was going to be. That time I was unconsciously trying to avoid the death of a fictional character. This time it’s real.

Jean Gabler: In 1978, the movie Grease was released and became a smash hit at the box office. Two of its songs—“Grease” and “You’re the One That I Want”—went to #1 on the Billboard charts. BOOKS | "Skirmish": Bitterly funny poetry from Dobby Gibson

To be honest, I’ve never been an avid reader of poetry. I have nothing against poems, but for some reason my mind wants words on a page to present themselves as prose, and balks at taking them seriously when they’re organized in rhymed couplets, sonnet form, or—God forbid—free verse. When verse is set to music, I can generally handle it better. One reason I found Minneapolis poet Dobby Gibson’s new collection, Skirmish, so enjoyable is that his combination of mordant wit and bittersweet longing so recalls the lyrics of my favorite songwriter, Bob Dylan. The Minnesota Coalition for a People’s Bailout and the Welfare Rights Committee are organizing a campaign to demand a “People’s Bailout” of increased and extended aid to the poor, protection of public education funding, and no layoffs. The campaign kicks off with a protest at the state capitol on Tuesday, January 6 at noon, during the opening session of the state legislature. MORE »
